At Lake Middle School, Hispanic Heritage Month is not just an event on the calendar: it's an affirmation of identity, community and belonging. Jayline Castellanos-Orozco and Nancy Dorado Madera, through their daily work, demonstrate what it truly means to be a "powerful" teacher.
Jayline Castellanos-Orozco: Elevating Excellence and Embracing Identity

As a 7th-grade English teacher and member of the School Leadership Team (STL), Jayline focuses her mission not only on guiding her students but also on supporting other teachers to raise academic rigor within the walls of Lake Middle School. For her, this support must be bidirectional and transformative, ensuring that students understand how to apply what they learn in their daily lives.
As someone who learned English during her high school years, Jayline understands firsthand the importance of representation and support. In her fourth year collaborating with the Hispanic Heritage event, she emphasizes the impact of showing families that food, music and community are vehicles for celebrating their origins.
"Students should never leave their identity at the door; here we welcome it," Jayline said, highlighting how students feel drawn in and connected when they see their story reflected in the school.
Nancy Dorado Madera: Authentic Bonds and Representation Without Borders

Representing her roots in Jalisco and Zacatecas, Nancy serves as Dean of Students, ensuring that every student feels valued and safe at school. For Nancy, being a "powerful" leader is deeply connected to the strength of her parents, a constant inspiration to represent not only her family, but all families in Central America and around the world.
Her success in actively engaging so many students in the Hispanic Heritage event lies in building genuine relationships from the very first day of classes. As a coach and leader within the building, Nancy knows that once the emotional bond is strengthened, participation flows naturally.
Her central message to the students after organizing this event is firm: "Here we love you, you are welcome and we can overcome any obstacle."
The Heart of Lake Middle School

Despite the daily challenges of education, both Jayline and Nancy find inspiration to remain passionate year after year in the real impact they have on their students. They embody the true essence of the school community: wholeheartedly representing all cultures, demonstrating that at Lake Middle School, diversity is the greatest strength.
