JFK CTE MedConnect
The John F. Kennedy CTE MedConnect program is designed to prepare students for a career in the rapidly expanding health care field. You will start with Biology your freshman year, take Health Science 1 and Anatomy/ Physiology, and then have the option of staying at JFK for Sports Medicine 1 or take advantage of other opportunities that exist at JFK or CEC, such as the Apprenticeship program or Certified Nursing Assistant program. JFK is currently working with Red Rocks Community College to offer concurrent enrollment opportunities, thus giving the student a chance to earn college credit in their chosen field while in high school.

Just like in college and career, you’ll be faced with projects and problems that must be solved. Most of these will be completed by teams of students learning to work together. Your results will be communicated through professional presentations, written reports, skits, written reflections, comprehensive exams, and more!
Course Descriptions
Health Science 1: Introduction to Health Science I is designed to give an overview of the therapeutic, diagnostic, environmental, and information systems of the health care industry. The course focuses on health careers, exploration, leadership development, ethical and legal responsibilities, the history of health care and the economics of health care. Students will develop a concept of health and wellness from the perspective of a health consumer as well as a potential health professional. Upon successful completion, the student can receive an American Heart Association’s Heartsaver First Aid and CPR/AED Certification.
Anatomy and Physiology: Anatomy and physiology is the study of the human body. Anatomy is concerned with the structure of a part, such as the shape and area of bones. Physiology is concerned with the function of those parts. Students will develop a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology, understand and use medical terminology that will increase their confidence if choosing a career in medicine, and actively participate in laboratory investigations which will allow them to think critically about scientific concepts and ideas.
Sports Medicine 1: Sports Medicine 1 will introduce students to the basic skills, concepts, and exciting career path of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. Topics will include: medical terminology, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries, anatomy, physiology, & emergency medicine. Students learn how to apply taping and wrapping techniques. Upon successful completion, the student can receive an American Heart Association’s First Aid and CPR/AED Certification.
