Globe in classroom

Dear DPS Community,

On March 19, 2024, Denver Public Schools released “La Raza Report,” which emerged from a research project that DPS hired The Multicultural Leadership Center, LLC to conduct. The report examines the experiences of the Latino community in DPS over several decades. In addition to sharing the research conducted in DPS, the report outlines 10 emerging themes and articulates 35 recommendations on how the district should address barriers and maximize opportunities for our Latino students, families and staff.

To prioritize the recommendations from the report and advise the Latinx Student Success team, DPS has commissioned the La Raza Advisory Council. We are happy to announce and welcome the following prominent Latino leaders serving on the council:

  • Dr. Ron Cabrera

  • Richard A. Carranza

  • Dr. Tania Hogan

  • Dr. Darlene LeDoux

  • Milo Marquez

The council has already begun convening to execute on the following scope of work:

  • Meeting with the report researchers to fully understand the research process, findings and recommendations.

  • Prioritize the 35 recommendations based on community and district input and council member expertise.

  • Develop clear measures of success for the prioritized recommendations.

  • Create a three-year roadmap for implementation.

  • Support the onboarding of the new Director of Latinx Student Success, Dr. Patricia Hurrieta.

While this important work is just beginning, I want to thank the council in advance for dedicating their time to ensuring we tackle priority recommendations, helping produce the best outcomes for our Latino students, families and staff.

In collaboration,

Dr. Alex Marrero
Superintendent
