On Saturday, Denver Public Schools’ Family and Community Engagement (FACE) department hosted the Black Excellence Summit at the University of Denver in partnership with the Culture, Equity and Leadership Team (CELT). Through a variety of workshops, discussions and panels, this event equipped participants with knowledge and tools to better navigate the education system, financial literacy, family engagement and much more. Keynote speaker Dr. Joe Johnson delivered an impactful address, emphasizing the power of perseverance in the pursuit of purpose. Another highlight of the day was the Dope Black Women Panel, moderated by Leslie L. Juniel, with panelists April Milow, Robbin Trotter, Dr. Franita Ware, and Representative Jennifer Bacon sharing their exceptional experiences of leadership and advocacy.
Attendees had the opportunity to explore a wide range of sessions. Topics ranged from state assessments and self-care to financial education and early childhood support. Presenters like Dr. Jazmyne Peters, Tiffany Grays, and Dr. Keena Day provided valuable insights during 60-minute sessions throughout the day, while resource tables from organizations such as the Black Parent Network, Denver Children’s Advocacy Center, and DPS Talent Acquisition offered additional support to families. With a full schedule of workshops and networking opportunities, the summit fostered a sense of community and provided attendees with tools to navigate challenges while promoting Black excellence within Denver’s educational landscape.
