Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program
The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a USDA grant opportunity for schools to provide elementary students with free fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day. The goal of the program is to promote the consumption of fruits and vegetables among school-aged children, educate students about the benefits of fruits and vegetables, and expose them to new varieties. Teaching children healthy eating habits helps to promote a healthy school environment, improves student health, and helps combat childhood obesity.
Sixty-one (61) DPS schools have been selected to participate in the USDA Fruit and Vegetable Program for the 2021-2022 school year. Students at these schools will be served a fresh fruit or vegetable snack three days per week. Teachers may request a nutrition education presentation for their class at any time throughout the year by contacting Leonard Apodaca.
The Food and Nutrition Services department applies to the Colorado Department of Education for eligible schools each year in April/May. Eligible schools must be elementary level and have at least 50% Free/Reduced Price eligibility. Please contact your Area Supervisor if you are interested in applying for the Fresh Fruit AND Vegetable Program for the 2022-2023 school year.
